2nd Grade Hawkins Elementary: Bloom Where You Are Planted. In the indoor greenhouse, students planted flowers but only mushrooms grew due to lack of lighting. They used 7 gallon grow bags with harvest windows and a greenhouse. Students were able to see plant growth above the soil and root growth below. The students were excited to talk about the importance of sunlight in growing plants.
4th Grade Horning Elementary: Hydroponics for Healthy Foods. Children grew salad greens using hydroponics and AI to help determine the right amount of humidity, light and plant food. Plants grown were lettuce, kale, cherry tomatoes, cilantro and green beans, to name a few. The children enjoyed a salad at the end of the experiment utilizing their plants.

Spencer Elementary Garden Club – Growing Native Plants to prevent Soil Erosion and improve playground appearance. Eric Howe and Genevieve Sobolevski from Spencer Elementary received a certificate which recognized their $500 grant. The grant helped phase two of their project. They winter sowed native plants, purchased native plants and received donations of native plants from Lynn O’Shaughnessy. These two teachers supervise 75 students from kindergarten to grade 4 as they created a garden last year and this year. Parents donated tools and a landscaper provided soil. We can’t wait to hear about phase three.
