Want to see a dress made entirely of flowers? Or jewelry made with succulent plant “jewels?”
Make plans now to attend the District IIB fall meeting, taking place Thursday, October 25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Crystal Gardens Banquet Center, located at 5768 E. Grand River in Howell. Check-in begins at 8 a.m.
Brighton Garden Club is hosting the event and has chosen as its theme “Avant Garden: Blending Nature, Art and Fashion.”
“Avant-garde fashion is characterized by experimental, radical and unorthodox approaches,” explained Cheryl Yelen, Decorations Co-chair for the event. “It uses innovative ideas and techniques to create unique fashion. Our club wanted to take the creativity of avant-garde fashion and combine it with nature. We explored the use of botanicals as the inspiration for the designs, colors and shapes that fashion takes.”
Attendees at the meeting will see a number of nature-inspired fashion creations.
“Brighton Garden Club member Kathy Mikuska designed and created a life-size dress, as well as two half-size dresses, made entirely of flowers, leaves and other nature-inspired materials,” Yelen said. “At the district meeting guests will also see moss-and flower-covered shoes and purses, jewelry made entirely of succulent ‘jewels’ and headpieces made from leaves and flowers … proving that flower-constructed fashion can also extend to the accessories department.”
Attendees will also see other art inspired by the natural world.
“Nature is the greatest inspiration to see beauty in the world, so we will also display artwork inspired by nature,” Yelen said.
Featured speakers include professional botanical photographer Laurie Tennent, who will talk about her art, and Charles Martin, senior horticulturalist at Dow Gardens in Midland, who will talk about the history, classification and care of roses.
In addition, attendees may shop from a variety of garden- and nature-themed vendors who will be selling their wares during breaks.
The cost is $30 per person and includes lunch. To register, send attendee name(s) and a check to Peggy Fukuda at 7745 Hammel Rd., Brighton, MI 48116. Questions? Call her at 916-835-6708.
